Who We Are
The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District
(NVSWCD) is a self-governing subdivision of the Commonwealth
of Virginia whose boundaries are the same as those of Fairfax
County. Founded in 1945 by citizens concerned about conservation,
NVSWCD is one of 46 districts within Virginia and currently
serves an area with more than 930,000 constituents. NVSWCD
is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. Three directors
are elected in a general election every three years and
two, including an extension agent serving Fairfax County,
are appointed by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation
Board.
Our Mission
The mission of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation
District is to promote the conservation and wise use of
soil and water resources and sound environmental policies
for Fairfax County.
Our Partners
NVSWCD manages a wide range of programs encouraging community
participation in conserving and protecting soil, water,
and related natural resources, with a particular focus on
the impact Fairfax County has on the Chesapeake Bay. These
programs are supported through local, state, and federal
assistance, including technical support from the USDA’s
Natural Resources Conservation Service, which shares our
office space. In addition, NVSWCD has cooperating relationships
with county and state agencies to help promote natural resources
conservation.
